Gouache - A water based Medium.

In the late 1970’s I began experimenting and perfecting techniques and favored the Gouache medium to express my messages in paintings.
It was a pioneering endeavor at the time, when conventional oil painting was considered the soul of painting and generally declared the only “real” Artist’s medium.
I was mixing water based  paintbrush with airbrush-masking-techniques.
In contrast to regular watercolors, neither the paper base or preliminary drawings show through the applied layer of Gouache Color. And when applied thicker, it will totally cover the layers under.  Gouache color dry fast, and I find that these properties of the medium suits my temperament and rhythm while visualizing Ideas.

Only very few Artists in the world favor the Gouache – Tempera colors and utilizing this medium artistically for expression in imagery.
It may be that I’m the loner in my embrace of Gouache Tempera, perhaps still the only one
…so be it!

Fascinating WaterColors

Already early on as very young, I was deeply fascinated by the magic of watercolors and the mastery of painting. I spent much of my youth sitting in the Flensburg harbor painting maritime scenery and wooden boats. Since then I predominantly use watercolors to paint water, flowers, animals and portraits.

The watercolor painting process is the most difficult to master.  In contrast to Gouache, when painting with watercolors the white paper replaces the color white. It is extremely difficult to fully control the mood of the water flow. Every layer under the last is seen as well as the mistakes made.
Alongside mastery of the Gouache painting techniques, the challenge of working rhythmically in the medium of watercolors has always been an exiting part of  creating my artwork.
